Our Brampton location is presently looking for Analytical Chemist




The main responsibilities of this position are to test and release raw materials, packaging components and perform in-process release and stability testing of R&D products.  Key duties include analytical data review, product testing using wet chemistry, HPLC & GC methods, preparation of reports, specifications stability summaries. These duties are performed in accordance with GMP/GLP regulations.  Work is completed in a timely manner, to ensure meeting departmental and corporate goals.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES  (Describe/list in clear, concise terms and preferably in order of importance, the six to ten functions/responsibilities of this position which are critical to the successful performance of the job.  Each statement should specify the purpose of the function, how it is accomplished, and the end result.  If necessary, include examples and/or attach an additional page.):


  • perform release and stability testing of R&D products and raw materials and analytical data review
  • report and clearly document all work performed
  • report GMP work in accordance with current GMP/GLP regulations
  • conduct laboratory investigation activities
  • participate in activities leading to product approval under the guidance of a Senior Chemist/Senior Scientist (i.e. deficiency letter responses for chemistry issues, investigations, etc.)
  • prepare research and data evaluation reports
  • participate in method development or validation studies (with guidance from senior R&D staff), as needed

  • maintain a clean laboratory environment and ensure that safety regulations are followed
  • general lab support and housekeeping tasks including waste disposal
  • research and prepare product and packaging material specifications
  • prepare and submit monthly reports regarding activities and results
  • other research activities as required


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (as detailed as possible, attaching a separate sheet if required, state the knowledge, skills and abilities which are needed to result in competent performance of the position.  Specify why the knowledge, skill or ability is required by explaining how it is used to perform the principal duties.):


  • sound knowledge of chemistry, with main focus on analytical, organic and physical chemistry
  • familiarity with modern computer assisted analytical instrumentation methods and with older techniques (i.e. titration)
  • sound theoretical and practical knowledge of chromatography and spectrography
  • good knowledge and understanding of GMP-s and GLP-s, as well as with pertinent FDA and TPP guidelines
  • ability to communicate and work effectively in a team-based environment
  • knowledge of applicable software
  • good organizational skills
  • multi-tasking ability
  • excellent written and verbal communication skills (Fluency in English)


BACKGROUND AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO DO THIS JOB (in clear, concise and brief terms, describe how a particular educational background or experience, however acquired, is needed to perform the principal duties of this position.):


  • B. Sc., M. Sc., Ph.D. in Chemistry or in a pharmaceutical-related field
  • Good theoretical and practical knowledge of organic, inorganic and analytical chemistry including in-depth knowledge of gas and liquid chromatography, spectrography and other analytical techniques employed in the pharmaceutical development


PROBLEM SOLVING (Describe the level/scope of decision making/problem solving required of the position by giving examples.):


  • Regular problem solving with significant degree of judgment coupled with excellent logical skills required.  Problems typically include chemistry related issues (i.e. understanding the chemistry/degradation of the active), instrumentation related problems.


WORKING CONDITIONS  (Describe the general conditions under which the position works - i.e. temperature, noise, cleanliness,  substances handled, varying work schedules, etc.)


  • Generally, fairly pleasant surroundings.  Occasional exposure to higher than normal noise levels.  Frequent, daily exposure to various chemicals used in the testing of raw materials, components and finished products.  Occasional exposure to unpleasant odors resulting from testing procedures.  Fairly level temperatures.  Mixture of standing and walking, some light lifting and/or movement of material/instruments.
